Progresso says: A colorful array of six different garden vegetables, penne pasta and a blend of flavorful herbs and spices, Italian-Style Vegetable combines the rich taste of Progresso with the trusted endorsement of Weight Watchers.

Jackie says: Anytime a meal promises a number like “six vegetables” or “five cheeses,” I take it upon myself to find and identify them. This soup came pretty close to passing my counting test. I easily counted five vegetables, and when I read that the sixth one was spinach, I did vaguely remember something that could have been spinach. The other vegetables were tomatoes (which is actually a fruit, but okay), carrots, green beans, celery, and peas. And then there is the penne pasta, which is just the right amount of firm, and there is a surprising amount of pasta considering how low in calories/fat this soup is. The broth is quite delicious, very tomato-y with a nice herb flavor. This is my favorite of all the Progresso Light soups – but I am not giving it five stars for the following reasons:

  1. Eight ounces of this is not a serving. They suck you in by telling you it’s 0 Weight Watchers points, but when you eat the whole can (because you have to…and even then this is not really a meal) it’s actually 1.5 points. Which is not bad considering it’s pretty good soup, but it is tricky. And I don’t like to be tricked.
  2. When you eat the whole can (again, because you have to), you are ingesting 70% of your recommended daily sodium intake. No wonder the broth is so good.
  3. I’m cheap, and at upwards of $3.00 a can when not on sale, this soup is too pricey to be a regular purchase, especially when I have to supplement it with other foods to create a full lunch.

I like you, Progresso Light Italian Style Vegetable Soup, but I do not love you. Can we just be friends?

Progresso says:A plentiful array of garden vegetables, curly noodles and flavorful herbs and spices you can actually see, Vegetable and Noodle combines the richness of Progresso with the trusted endorsement of Weight Watchers.

Katie says: So far the Progresso Light line of soup has served me well (I’m a huge fan of the Progresso Southwestern Vegetable Soup), so I decided to try the non-southwestern vegetable and noodle variety.

This soup is made up of chicken broth (sorry, vegetarians) packed with celery, carrots, green beans, corn, noodles, peas, and a mix of flavorings and spices. This is also one of the varieties that is available in a microwavable bowl which makes it a really easy option to take for lunch. After only about 3 minutes in the microwave I had a nice steamy bowl of soup waiting for me, and it only took one bite to determine that Progresso had gotten it right again with this soup. One of my all time favorite soups is chicken noodle and this soup pretty much tastes like a classic chicken noodle soup without the pieces of chicken, and I didn’t really miss the chicken because the flavor of everything else was great. The mix of spices is a perfect complement to the chicken broth and I love the choice of the wide spiral noodles.

For a soup that only has 60 calories per serving there was a large amount of veggies and noodles so that you won’t feel like this soup is missing anything. I think you definitely could add chicken to the soup to mix it up a bit, but you don’t need to. The vegetable noodle soup is great just as it is. The nutritional stats are basically the same as the other soups in the light line with 60 calories per cup, 0 weight watchers points, and 4 grams of fiber. As with the other the sodium is a bit high, but not really an issue unless you are on a diet where you have to restrict your sodium intake. I definitely recommend this soup for days when you just want a classic, comforting, and delicious bowl of soup; it will definitely be a regular on my grocery list.

*Same warning as before. Yes, the nutrition profile on this soup has been engineered to be 0 Points for one serving. However, if you eat both servings of this soup you’ll actually use 2 points. Yep, those folks at Progresso are pretty wily. – Editrix

Progresso says: A beautiful bouquet of six different garden vegetables, hearty black beans and plenty of spice.

Katie says: One of my favorite aspects of the change from summer into Fall and Winter has to be the begin of soup-eating season. Soup is definitely one of my favorite additions to lunch or dinner because it really hits the spot on those colder days. I try to maintain a very healthy diet so I am always on the lookout for new low calorie foods and was very excited when I heard about Progresso light soups.

So far, Progresso’s Southwestern-style Vegetable is my favorite variety; it is so flavorful that you would never guess that it is only 60 calories per serving. Sometime low calorie soup is unbelievably bland with nothing but broth and a few veggies. This is not the case here; the soup is packed with beans, corn, a variety of vegetables and the perfect amount of spiciness. At only 120 calories for the entire can this soup is an awesome addition to lunch or dinner that only takes 2-3 minutes to heat in the microwave. I also recommend getting more protein in by adding leftover diced chicken to the soup. Chicken fits right in with the Southwestern theme.

Perhaps even better than the taste are the nutrition facts. For all of its flavor, this soup is super low calorie and has 4 grams of fiber per serving. The sodium is a little high, but that is pretty typical of canned soups in general. [Consuming an entire can of this soup is just 120 calories, but 70% of your sodium for the day. Apparently MSG is low in calories. -Editrix]

As Fall becomes Winter, Progresso’s soup is definitely on my weekly grocery list. I make sure to stock up when it goes on sale since it is a bit more expensive than the regular Progresso soup, but in my opinion, totally worth the price.
