Safeway says: A Real Indulgence! Prepared to perfection with the finest quality ingredients, including fresh cream, and real butter, delicately topped with toasted bread crumbs.
Sarah says: Now don’t get me wrong, Safeway’s macaroni was delicious. But unfortunately, dear reader, I cannot give you a strong recommendation to buy said macaroni. Because while it was cheesy, filling, and, well, macaroni-y to the last bite, it was also HUGE. To their credit, Safeway does clearly state on the front of their box the fact the meal inside contains 2 servings—an apparent attempt to indicate to you, the buyer, that you are supposed to share.
But I ask you: who shares macaroni?
Not I. When I heat up some frozen macaroni at work, I want to eat every last cheese-a-riffic noodle in the box. When faced with the giant box of Safeway noodles and mystery cheese, I had a difficult decision on my hands. Act properly and eat the entire thing, thus consuming 700 calories, or be a wimp and break out the Tupperware?
Those who know me well will know that I ate it all. However, I wouldn’t allow myself to be tempted into gluttony a second time, and thus would probably not purchase Safeway’s macaroni again. I would really only recommend it to people with a strong willpower than my own, or those who are eating it for dinner after a very long (and calorie burning!) day.
As for the actual food? The noodles were of a good consistency, and the cheese was thick. The added “bread crumbs†didn’t really seem to be bread, as far as I could tell, but they were tasty nonetheless. The only other complaint that I had is the amount of time it took to cook—approximately 15 minutes in the microwave! I could have boiled up an entire pot of Kraft in that time… and they come in spirals.

Safeway says: Peppered to Perfection! Spicy chicken breast strips served with rice, water chestnuts, onions, celery, yellow carrots, and mushrooms.
Carolyn says: This was the most disappointing frozen meal I have had in a long, long time. The large size of the portion had me excited for a big, hearty lunch. The box clearly said “TWO SERVINGS”, but if it was good I knew I could finish the meal. As soon as I took the tray out of the microwave I realized this meal was not going to be as the picture suggested. The vegetables were soggy and brown. I’m not sure why they decided that bean sprouts were appropriate for a frozen meal, but it was a very bad decision. The onions were brown and soggy clumps, the celery was slimy, and the only thing that displayed any crispness were the water chestnuts. The peppered sauce coagulated while heating, and despite my stirring, there were areas of caked teriyaki sauce along the sides of the container and in two corners. The chicken was the only decent part of the meal, so once I finished the pieces of chicken, I threw the rest away.

Safeway says: A rich pesto pizza topped with a traditional Mediterranean blend of mozzarella and feta cheeses, tomatoes and red onions.
Veda says: What can I say about the Bistro Minis? This was my first time trying them and they are as they delicious as they look. Although they are not microwave friendly, I followed the toaster oven directions and these mini-pizzas came out perfectly. The pesto sauce is yummy and the tomatoes were juicy and scrumptious under the melted mozzarella and feta. Perfect for lunch, snacks or for finger foods at a party. I paired them with stuffed grape leaves for my lunch and was more than satisfied. Plus, I got them on sale for $1.50 at Safeway. Can’t beat that!
One word of caution - The pesto has the perfect amount of garlic and onion to tempt your taste buds and the aroma while they cook may also tempt your co-workers. BUT afterwards, be kind and pop a mint.
