Happy Birthday, Heat Eat Review!
April 18, 2008 | Reviewer: Abi Jones

In April Heat Eat Review turned two! Yes, we’ve been writing about frozen meals for two whole years. The image above? Well, that’s straight from the birthday card my mom sent. She reads Heat Eat Review every day. Hi mom!
I’d like to share some stats we’ve accumulated in the last year:
466
Reviews on Heat Eat Review
14.8
Percent of reviews that are Lean Cuisine Items (that’s 69, for you non-math folks)
Last year, 19.18% of all reviews on the site were Lean Cuisines
$1165
Estimated amount of money we’ve spent on review food
(We buy things that are on sale)
8
Average number of comments a review generates, up from 4.125 last year
67
Number of comments on Jess’s review of Kashi’s Sweet and Sour Chicken
119,806
Spam comments blocked by Akismet
This year Heat Eat Review received 5 times as much spam as last year
36
Number of Review Contributors
You can become a contributor, too.
I’d also like to share some new and upcoming features:
- Dedicated frozen pizza reviews section
That’s right, we have a category just for Frozen Pizza Reviews. I’m more than a bit ashamed that we don’t have more pizza on Heat Eat Review, so one one my goals for the site is to eat more pizza. I know, my life is so hard. - Ability to view all ’sponsored’ reviews
I’d like to improve transparency at Heat Eat Review, so I’m going to create a category for all of the reviews involving food sent to us by companies. This should give you an easy way to see if we’re serious about ethics or if we are just a bunch of corporate hacks. - Gravatars (Globally Recognized Avatars)
Coming soon: Gravatars at Heat Eat Review, meaning that you’ll have a little picture appear next to your comments. The picture is connected to the email address you enter via a Gravatar account. If you don’t have a Gravatar, get one at the Gravatar website. - Video Reviews, now without annoying laptop fan noise.
The next video review will go up on Friday, April 25th. Yes, I got a microphone. Yes, I found Lunchables Tacos. Yes, they are gross. No, I’m not going to tell you anything else about it until the review goes up.
Thanks for reading Heat Eat Review! I look forward to seeing what Year Three brings!
Boston Market Lasagna Recall
March 5, 2008 | Reviewer: Abi Jones
The danger-beef used in school lunches across the country was also part of the Boston Market Frozen Foods supply chain. According to Nicole, Boston Market Lasagna with Meat Sauce is a five star meal, so I don’t look forward to her reaction when she sees this news.
Boston Market is currently recalling 40,000 cases of potentially harmful lasagna, which is an insane amount of lasagna when you think about it. You could build a house out of that much lasagna.
At this time, consumers with questions can contact the Boston Market Frozen Food Consumer Helpline at 1-800-488-0050. The Boston Market Frozen Meals website is generally static so I’m not sure when they’ll be updating it with recall info.
Update: Products affected by the recall have lot codes: NQ7K04, NQ7K11, NQ7K22, NQ7L13, NQ7M21 and NQ8A24.
I’ll update this post as further information becomes available.
2 Weeks and Counting
January 25, 2008 | Reviewer: Abi Jones
In April 2007 (yes, almost a year ago) I asked the readers of HeatEatReview.com to participate in a survey, a survey of which frozen food they’d like to see me review in a video. The selected item was Kid Cuisine Deep Sea Adventure Fish Sticks.
I didn’t realize it would take me months just to find the fish sticks. And now I know why they aren’t carried in more than one store per metropolitan area. They are dangerously mind-altering:

Notice that I’ve gone from innocent (albeit, blurry) to in-focus and haunted? Yeah, that’s what these fish sticks will do to you.
I’ve been filming, editing, putting together some music and realizing that I was a fool to think that I could accomplish my vision with the software that came with my PC. I’m still trying to figure out exactly how to incorporate video reviews (yes, I said reviews, with an ’s’, plural) into HeatEatReview.com.
I’ve had (and am still having) a lot of fun making this video and I can’t wait to share it with you on February 8, 2008.
Ground Beef Recalls in 2007
November 3, 2007 | Reviewer: Abi Jones
Here’s a list of recent ground beef recalls for those of you that might be freaking out right now:
| Date of Recall | Company | Amount Affected | Area Affected |
|---|---|---|---|
| 02 November 2007 | Cargill | Over 1 million pounds | Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Weis in Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. |
| 25 September 2007 | Topps | Over 27 million pounds | USDA Alert (PDF) |
| 03 June 2007 | United Food Group | 75,000 pounds | USDA Alert |
I give up. After typing of three of the recall info notices I got grossed out and decided that if you want to know about all of the ongoing meat recalls, you should check out the United States Department of Agriculture’s site yourself. It is pretty creepy when you see the crazy sorts of things that are getting into our food supply.
So, if you’d like to go on in your merry, oblivious ways, don’t click the links below. Otherwise, feel free to check out the Food Safety and Inspection Service:
Happy tailgating!
