Evidence of Inflation?

June 6, 2008 | Reviewer: Abi Jones

The contest continues until 5pm Pacific. At that time, if nobody can provide me photographic evidence of more expensive, yet tiny, Lean Cuisine meals, the grand prize (a $10 iTunes gift certificate) shall go unclaimed until the next contest.

Expensive Lean Cuisine at Mollie Stone’s

I’m still in shock over the non-sale prices on frozen foods here. If someone can send me a photo with the same meal (either Garlic Beef with Broccoli or Chicken Marsala) and a higher regular price, I’ll send you a prize.

A good prize. Not Taco Bell Bowlz.

Strangely, Heat Eat Review does not have reviews of either of those items. But that’s not the point. The point is that these Lean Cuisines are $5.19 each and you can win a prize if you send me a photo of more expensive ones.

yay! I’d take a taco bell bowlz! Does that make me a dirty person?

  2. Emily on June 6th, 2008

Where do you live? They are about half that price regular here in Houston!

That photo was taken at Mollie Stone’s in Palo Alto, CA (about 30 miles south of San Francisco). It is a supermarket that bills itself as “The best of both worlds”. I think it is because they have tons of organic and all natural stuff, but carry Chee-tohs, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Bologna, too.

I was at my local PW (San Jose, California) last week. I think they were $5.29 there, but that store is infamous for ridiculously high prices. I remember pointing and laughing at the price with my boyfriend. I’ll try to get a picture.

They are up a bit in florida but nowhere near that. If you shop at a local market especially an organically related one you are going to get hosed.

I haven’t seen ANY meal that high, not even the fancy Kashi ones! That said, I’ve had both of those meals and they kinda suck. Garlic Broccoli tasted more like plastic broccoli and chicken marsala is covered in this sickly, slimy sauce that doesn’t taste like much of anything. DONT WANT.

I think they’re about $3.79 here in D.C., but I can’t tell for sure since Safeway always has them 3/$9.99. They used to be 4/$10. Damn you economy!!!

Wow that is ridiculous. Lean Cuisines are about $2.50 ish in Maine at my local grocery. Sadly the Amy’s Kitchen’s items seem to be more expensive for me than the prices you have on here. Their pasta shells and other entrees basically go for a little over $5. =(

It’s this kind of thing that forced me out of the Bay Area and back to the drudges of the Midwest.

    *sigh*

Anyone on here live in NYC? That’s the only place I’ve been to that had higher prices for this kind of thing then SF in the continental USA.

I think they might be about four bucks here down in good ole coastal georgia, but maybe higher at harris teeter. unfortunately, I don’t shop at harris teeter much. mostly because I’m not into paying that much.

A sign of the Apocalypse right there, I tell ya.

    Uh, wow.

Maybe it’s just my australian perspective - but that’s really cheap! Lean cusine is about $6 a go or so here. Man, now I want to live in america - both your rent and your food are cheaper, even in a big city!

They are near $4 out by me but at the Walmart they run around $3. I have been keeping an eye out for clearance frozen dinners recently (usually when they intorduce a new line) and then stock up.

I used to live on Lean Cuisines….but now I’m getting more into cooking for myself! I went to Publix today and was so tempted to get the Chicken Carbonara Lean Cuisine, and I skipped over the 3.69 price and bought myself some ingredients instead!

  15. shannon on June 7th, 2008

Wow, that’s insane. LC are only around $3 here (semi-upstate NY).

  16. bj on June 7th, 2008

$2.79 at Wal-mart in Atlanta. I think you will get to keep that prize, Abi.

  17. Ginia on June 8th, 2008

You know … Hungry-Man dinners are currently on sale at Safeway, for $3 each, right here in the lovely Bay Area. That’s $3 for a pound of food, Heat-Eat-Review people!

  18. Laura on June 8th, 2008

I’m in NYC and am sure I can find higher prices than that. Will check at the store a bit later…

  19. Jessica on June 8th, 2008

Last time I went to the store, the same meals were $2.50 each. Walmart had Kashi Pasta Primavera on sale for $1.50. I live in a small town. Food and rent is still cheap here.

  20. rob on June 8th, 2008

Publix marked all the Amy’s products up over $5 except for the full size pizzas which are 2 for $10. I currently have 8 of the pizzas in my freezer but the other entrees are way out of my league.

  21. Kylie M on June 9th, 2008

Thats nothing, they are about $8 here in Australia!!!

  22. Denise on June 9th, 2008

I checked the safeway on Capital Hill in Seattle - 3.79 for the same items.

And on sale for 4/11.00. Hoodily hoo!

  23. Julie A. on June 9th, 2008

    8 Australian dollars = 7.5736 U.S. dollars

    That IS BAD.

Wow I remember back in the good ol’ days when I’d buy stuff from Aus. on eBay because the US Dollar was worth so much more. Gone the way of $2.99 USD gallon of gas it seems.

  24. Davie on June 10th, 2008

@rob - He who has access to Publix cannot complain. Best American chain grocery store EVER!

  25. Molly Beth on June 11th, 2008

I just came back from my Giant Grocery Store in the Philadelphia suburbs - the largest packaged of LC at regular price was $2.79.

Out near Amish Country, PA where my parents live, they’re even cheaper. I’ve seen the smaller, lunch time meals go for 2/$4.

  26. Rebecca on June 12th, 2008

Yeah, I’m sure that in Manhattan I could find a $6+ Lean Cuisine. I’ll look around today.

  27. Mike on September 6th, 2008

No Frills in Ontario, Canada sells them for $2.00. Swanson Hungry Man dinners are regularly available for $2.00 with lots of trans-fats.
