Smuckers says: We’ve discovered a new way to seal our homemade goodness into a delicious PB sandwich. The secret is there’s no crust to kids love ‘em!
Abi says: These are a huge waste of money. $2.50 for four peanut butter (no jelly) sandwiches? That’s 62.5¢ per sandwich, and that’s when they’re on sale.
But, if I see these on sale I pick up a box. Why? Because I don’t eat enough bread to make buying an entire loaf worthwhile (this may change when I start working from home) and peanut butter? I’m sure I have some in the cupboard, but without any bread a sandwich is out of the question. And when I do buy bread it is usually something fun like a fresh baguette from the farmer’s market, a loaf of rosemary and olive oil bread from Wegman’s, or a couple of Asiago bagels. None of those things are particularly good partners for peanut butter.
Smucker’s Uncrustables let me satisfy my occasional peanut butter craving without requiring me to keep a loaf of bread in the house at all times. Sure, I wish that they were made with whole wheat bread and that they came with all natural peanut butter, but considering that at most I have one a week, I can deal with those limitations.

I buy these for the exact same reasons (with wegmans artisan bread steaming in its little paper bag and a full chorus of happy employees willing to burst into song while joyously slicing it for me, wonder bread is out of the question.) I buy the ones with jelly. They satisfy my sweet tooth and remind me of opening my “Orphan Annie” lunch box in grade school and devouring a pb&j. I often take them up to bed me when I read and after the recommended half-hour-thaw I’ll open it up as a snack. For nostalgia and tickling my sweet tooth- I think they’re worth the exorbitant price.
A few bread companies (at least here in the midwest) have recently started selling half loaves at the supermarket. Bunny and Healthy Life are two brands that come to mind. They’re a godsend for me! You get about 12-14 slices instead of 10,000 like a normal loaf.

Buy a loaf of bread and keep it in the freezer. Pull out 2 slices, defrost, slather on nutty butter, enjoy no less than 10 sandwiches for the cost of 4. Also, keep or donate your crust to the birds.
When I lived in New England, I’d pack two sandwich, fruit and yogurt lunches each morning. One for me and one for me to give to a person “in need”, I’d pass walking to the firm at which I worked.
I like crust.
While home-frozen bread works just fine for toast (and I lack a toaster), it is not good for sandwiches. And as you can imagine, freezer space is premium real estate in my home.
This is a great concept, unfortunately my mom od’ed me on PBJ sandwiches when I was a kid. It’s just about ALL she ever made for my lunch for me. She did make a few baloney ones like once a month. Bleh.
I do keep a jar of P-Butter in my earthquake survival kit. If your starving you’ll eat anything.
Abi– about the defrosted bread, just leave a couple of slices in the fridge over night. That way you don’t have to toast them and they are great for sandwiches. It’s what I always do
Also, I think they make a peanut butter & honey kind on wheat. you might want to check it out
As a 31-year-old sad and lonely bachelor, I can still eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes if I want to add a little pizzaz, I’ll toast the bread or make a triple decker sandwich. Mmm…Carbolicious!!!
Those Uncrustables are frickin’ expensive!
Those look like some sort of hideously mutated sand dollar, filled with goo.
Julie - I”m glad that I don’t have to be starving to enjoy Peanut Butter. Thank you George Washington Carver!
L - Even that doesn’t work for me. I’m very particular when it comes to bread texture. That’s why these only get 4 stars: the bread’s a bit mushy.
And you would not believe how many grocery stores I’ve been to looking for the honey and wheat bread variety. If anyone out there has seen them in DC, please let me know.
Marvo - As the peanut industry ads in the DC metro say “Did you forget about peanut butter because you got old or did you get old because you forgot about peanut butter?” I probably shouldn’t put that in quotes because it most certainly just the gist of the ad, not a quote.
Crow - If you rewrote it to say “Smucker’s Uncrustables Peanut Butter sandwich is like a soft and hideously mutated sand dollar filled with goo, delicious peanut butter goo.” then you’d be correct.
I loved the concept behind uncrustables and bought a box of the cheese version. I stashed them in the freezer for a day when I felt too frazzled to make a proper lunch for my six year old and her gang of friends. Thinking they’d go crazy over the Uncrustables, I served them for lunch one afternoon. Each kid ate about 2 bites and left the rest of of the uncrustable on their plates. Can’t remember what I did with the fourth one. I’ll give the peanut butter version a try, though.
Anna - I can’t even look at the cheese ones. I was going to say that I feel sorry for Fuzz, but then I remembered that she has a fun mom.
They used to give us vegetarians the Uncrustables with peanut butter and jam at summer camp, and I thought them godly. I still adore them. So. Much. Peanut butter!
I just tried the smuckers pb+j uncrustable.. and actually was quite surprised at their handiness and deliciousness. They’re especially perfect for on the go as the crust is a pouch like item that is sealed all the way around… less mess great taste
