Progresso says: A traditional Italian combination of lentils and spinach gives this naturally flavorful soup an authentic Italian taste.
Rebecca says: According to their website, Progresso's slogan is "A Taste of the Good Life." Indeed, Progresso's Vegetable Classics Lentil soup was quite tasty. It had the salty, onion-y flavor of restaurant lentil soup and didn't seem to miss anything by absence of onion pieces, carrots, or tomatoes which were suggested in the recipe I found for lentil soup online.
As one can see from the picture, the lentils sunk to the bottom, which gave the illusion of too much broth. However, unlike the Gumbo I previously reviewed, a quick stir resulted in a nice mix of broth and lentils. The lentils themselves were flavorful and neither too mushy nor too crunchy.
There were pieces of spinach and celery throughout the soup which were, amazingly, the same size as the lentils. This attention to detail must be evidence of the "good life" Progresso reveals to us. As I ate the soup in full spoonfuls, I could not identify the taste of these vegetables as they were outnumbered and out-textured by the lentils. Mostly, I just tasted the lentil-onion combination.
The only thing missing from this meal was a crusty piece of bread which would have been great to help scoop out the lentils. I'll have to make sure to get that for next time. Although the soup claims to be an excellent source of fiber (especially because I consumed both servings), I needed my afternoon snack earlier than usual. Perhaps some bread would have postponed the hunger a bit longer.

The progresso lentil soup is made even better by combining it with a can of “Milder” Ro-tel. I combine the can of soup with the tomatoes, split between two tupperware containers, and have two lunches ready to go for work.
I eat this soup all the time. It’s zesty, filling and cheap. I pair mine with whole wheat crackers and a slice of swiss cheese. Delicious!
This is quite a coincidence; I just had this soup for the first time last week. I really liked it and it filled me up quite well. In fact I liked it so much that I went back and got another can of the lentil soup and I decided to buy a can of the split pea as well. I haven’t tried it yet, though.
The split pea is awesome as well!
I’ll have to try this. I love soup and the most recent lentil soup I had (I won’t name names yet) was pretty abysmal. Then again, the summer months are here and I hardly ever feel like eating something ‘hot.’
Please try the sausage-chicken and rice jumbalya it is to die for. A little spicy but very good. and only 6 pts for the whole can.
This is my favorite work lunch. I throw in some tortilla chips and diced tomatoes.
Unlike so many canned soups, the Progresso Lentil is not too salty and it provides a great source of fiber.
This is my favorite Progresso soup and I eat it all the time, but it is still so damn salty. I have yet to find a canned soup that is not salty yet not bland.
Progresso, your soups are the best of them all–tops, in my opinion. I especially miss the Chicken with Escarole you used to make, but my family loves your Pea Soup with Ham and Lentil soup…keep up the great work! Thank you.
the soup is very tasty. My twist to it is by first sauteeing a grownded Garlic in a bit of olive oil and add the soup. Sprinkle some Cumin, and black pepper. This will give it a different taste.
Thank You
Omar
I love their black bean soup. I cut up some andouille sausage into it and serve with rice. It makes a hardy meal. I will have to try it with this soup.
I love Progresso Black Bean Soup but it seems to have vanished from the city I live in - surprising, as I live in a big city. I’d buy it online if I could but haven’t found it there either.
