Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie. ~Jim Davis

Budget Gourmet says: Nothing. I can’t find a promotional blurb for this meal anywhere.

Abi says: First, the bad news. This meal (side dish?) contains chicken fat (ingredient #6), margarine (ingredient #7) and beef extract (ingredient #12). Yes, it actually contains chicken fat and beef extract twice.

The good news: this was some deliciously schmaltzy stir fry rice. Dang, if I just needed to add chicken fat, margarine, and beef extract to stuff to get it to taste so buttery and fatty, then I would have been doing that a long time ago.

The bad news: it is twenty minutes later and I have been hit with an extraordinarily serious and uncomfortable case of heartburn.

Oh my God. It is burning my insides.

This rice is not good for people who are vegetarians (it is trick rice!), those taking Orlistat (immense amounts of fat), or those with acid reflux disease.

Oh, my insides…

Well done with finding the perfectly appropriate Toothpastefordinner for this situation. I miss those days when Drew drew whatever was in my brain!

    I hate heartburn.

Budget Gourmet is good when I’m too lazy to make a starch and just want to throw some fish on the grill or in the toaster oven. I wasn’t aware of the multiple animal fats, though…but maybe they can make a turducken rice to capitalize on this. That would redeem them.

This is my favorite Budget Gourmet - I used to eat it at least once a week for lunch. I also use it as the rice when I cook chicken teriakyi because it has veggies in it. I knew about the animal fat and extracts…which means that I shouldn’t eat it during Lent, but I do (don’t tell the priest!). I’m sorry about the heartburn but I’ve never experienced it with this meal - other meals yet but not this one. Hope you feel better!

My husband works outside all day-rain or shine- and I send him off in the morning with his little “lunch-box stove” so he can have a hot meal for lunch. I quite often send your box meals with him and up until now they have been very good.Today I sent him with the Roasted Turkey and he told me he had to search for the meat.As there was about 1 table spoon of turkey he was disappointed and this is not enough to call a meal. I hope this was a fluke. We may try again or go to something else. Thanks for reading this.Barb

[…] down to 189.0 today.  For brunch I had a Budget Gourmet Stir Fry Rice & Vegetables which was nasty.  There some weird pesticide taste and film in it.  Ugh.  Won’t buy/eat […]

I don’t know how you can like this stuff. . . I’m having trouble finishing it as we speak. :-( It’s like they dumped a bunch of that Olestra fat substitute stuff in it; I have the same film in my mouth right now as when I had those nasty “Wow” potato chips a few years back.

I’ll trade you the remaining one of these in my freezer for a Swedish Meatballs.

Great site. I really enjoy the articles. Keep up the good work. I’m linking my site to this page. maybe someday you will be reviewing Tuccelli Marshmallow Temptations.

I think that due to the low portion size of these wonderful treats, the “bad” stuff isn’t so bad. I enjoy mixing this meal with some fresh vegatables and perhaps Asian mustard, or a little spicey sauce.

This is one of my absolutely favorite heat and eats, and has been for a few years. Not low fat, but definitely tasty! Lots of carrots and peas, very buttery, just enough soy (or something)! Highly reccommended.
