****
***** if they brought back the rice

Tandoor Chef says: Boneless chicken breast marinated, roasted and simmered in a robust, creamy sauce.

Abi says: The during the late summer of 2006, Deep Foods consolidated their Curry Classics and Green Guru frozen meal lines into the Tandoor Chef brand. The sauces and quality are the same, but the some meals no longer include rice.

The loss of rice took Tandoor Chef’s Chicken Tikka Masala from ‘Excellent’ to ‘Pretty Good’. I don’t particularly want or need to eat an entire container of sauce along with my chicken. Sure, the chicken is deliciously tender and bathed in a masala sauce that defies diets, but it isn’t what I want for a whole lunch. After a brief examination of the nutritional info (9 net carbs!), I wonder if someone at Deep Foods is on an Atkins kick. Let’s pray that it ends quickly and without further food-altering incidents.

All of you sauce-lovers are in luck; the masala is fragrant with spices; warming and hearty. Unfortunately, I want a slightly balanced meal, a meal with rice, a meal with carbs. I miss mixing my chicken and sauce and rice together in a loving, community-building action. Hey Deep Foods, bring back the rice!

Your disenchantment with the loss of rice is interesting considering the amount of readers disdaining the use of rice and noodles as fillers to many frozen meals…

  2. Syrra on December 30th, 2006

Indian food without rice is like a hotdog without a bun.

  3. MaryAnne on January 2nd, 2007

Normally I agree that too many meals use noodles and rice as fillers that don’t compliment the meal. However, Syrra makes a good point- Indian needs rice… and naan… and samosas… mmm. Damn diet! I won’t be seeing those things until my birthday. 6 weeks people… 42 days. Pure torture.

    hey, guys…

i look at a very different way. Its very easy to make rice at home and i get more curry with same price. So its a win win situation for me.

    Cheers

This is one of my office fav. True, it doesn’t have any rice but I can pick up california sushi rolls on the cheap in the same market to complement the meal. Yum yum!

This dish is the curry bomb.com . . . I can’t believe a frozen dinner can be this delicious. Cooking my own rice is no problem for the sake of more savory sauce. i make a noise when I put this food in my mouth. mmmmm!

This is one of the best, if not the best Tandoor dish I had ever had. We have it almost every week. Would highly recommend. I pay $4.79 for this baby in a Ft. Lauderdale Fl grocery store. Can I get it for cheaper (10 packs) ?

I love this stuff–I do low carb so I put this over spinach. So good.

I like the fact that it doesn’t come with rice since I can make the rice at home. It means more sauce in the package. For me this is dinner and I can easily make brown basmati rice in my kitchen.

I find it funny how all these people, including the reviewer are praising FROZEN Indian food. Trust me, if you think that this tastes good, you havent had real Indian food. My mom makes much better homemade meals than this abomination called food. I tried it, and the first bite made me think I was chewing rubber. Plus, the masala is horribly overspiced; this is not what Chicken tikka masala is supposed to taste like! (I’ve eaten this dish many many times at my house or in India) I guess its only fair to forgive your low tastes, as you guys arent ethnically Indian, but if you ever want REAL, tasty Indian food, go to a reputed Indian restaurant like Bukhara or Gaylord in the states. Better yet, stop by at my house in NY.

Anjani - We’d love to head over to your mom’s house for some authentic Indian food (or better yet, have her come to the office to cook for us), but she’s probably a busy woman.

HeatEatReview.com is about getting the best food possible for low prices and high degrees of convenience. No matter how amazing they may be, Indian restaurants in NY don’t fit that bill.

While this is not as good as high end Indian restaurants it is the best frozen, canned or vacuum sealed Indian food I have ever had. In many cases this may actually be better than going out to a hole-in-the-wall type restaurant. If you can’t or don’t want to cook this food is excellent and I hope that this company comes out with more flavors.

As for the lack of rice, I am glad they didn’t charge me for some cheap rice. I can make my own or I can eat it without.

This is my absolute favorite frozen Indian food! (Along with their paneer masala)
If you don’t have/want rice, try this with their garlic naan.

Also kind of odd, Anjani, is I thought chicken tikka masala wasn’t even a real Indian dish but something cooked up to satisfy the less than discerning British palate. And mine loves this particular abomination - it’s the best I have found here!

    Hello,

I LOVE this stuff! I actually do NOT like the one with rice. I was wondering if someone could please send me the UPC code (on the box) for this product? I am changing duty stations and being sent overseas… I will use the UPC code to have the comissary order a case or two when I need it. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Steve

[…] I have the most ridiculously packed freezer at Stanford. I went to the kitchen, pulled out a box of Tandoor Chef Chicken Tikka Masala, mentally took back anything bad I ever said about the lack of rice in the dish, and tossed a […]

I was in India in New Dehli for a month and my indian friends never eat chicken tikka masala with rice but with nan. And because here is no rice this is #1 food for me now! the only problem that its always out of stock….. where to buy?

  20. Abi Jones on June 8th, 2008

Yuriy - My ideal version of this would come with naan and not rice, but naan in the microwave is nothing like naan fresh from a tandoor or reheated in a conventional oven.

I buy mine at a local Indian story (India Cash and Carry in San Jose), but I’ve also purchased it in ‘regular’ grocery stores and Whole Foods. Whole Foods might in fact be your best bet. Just call ahead.
