Swanson says: Swanson, the brand you trust for great tasting, snack sized, pot pies and complete meals. Prepared with the highest quality ingredients, Swanson’s Macaroni and Cheese requires no mixing and no mess! Just cook and serve for great taste made easy.
Abi says: Supposedly (according to the blurb above) there is no mixing necessary for this meal! However, the instructions for microwaving Swanson Macaroni and Cheese read otherwise:
- Place dish on microwave-safe plate
- Microwave on HIGH 2 minutes
- Separate with fork; stir thoroughly
- Microwave on HIGH 1 to 1 1/2 minutes
- Stir before serving
I don’t know about you, but I think of mixing and stirring as being pretty freaking similar. The other lie on the package? “Great Taste Made Easy”. If ‘great taste’ means ‘the sort of food given to people in nursing homes because they’re about to die anyways’, then yes, Swanson’s Macaroni and Cheese is bursting with great taste.

That can’t be edible. It just can’t. Have you experienced any side effects? Hair loss? Orange bowel movements? Twitching? Uncontrollable gag reflex?
The worst part of meals like these: the cardboard “bowl.” I mean, look at it — it’s disfigured beyond all purpose. It looks like it can barely withstand the non-mixing about to take place. It becomes easily burned, instantly floppy, and as soggy as reconstituted broccoli. Who cares about the macncheese — that bowl needs to be outlawed.
@ MaryAnne – Yes, No, No, Yes, Yes
@ Corey – I’m down with cardboard bowls because they are less of a burden on the environment (vs. plastic trays). Sometimes I forego the recommended ‘plate under the bowl’ but you definitely can’t do that with this meal.
I enjoyed this mac. And I’m the most partial judge on here, as I’ve had most of the macs you guys have reviewed so far.
Colleen, since you were bold enough to admit you enjoyed it, I will have to confess that as a teenager, I ate this stuff all the time. Back then, it was a low cal alternative to richer, higher fat macaroni and cheeses, and as a calorie obsessed teen, it seemed like a good choice. And yes, I enjoyed it.
Now back in those days, back when all frozen foods had “conventional” oven directions and we were lucky to get some microwave directions, the Swanson macs came in a little round foil tin. You’d set it on a cookie sheet, bake it, and it would get a nice crusty top. I’m not saying it was the best ever mac and cheese, but it was a pretty good thing for 210 calories and satisfying. It looked much better than the macaroni in the picture, which is kind of a sad picture because as you see, the poor macaroni struggled to form a crush with the micro-heat, but alas it was a nasty edge-crust, as micro-heat tends to do.
Anyway. I haven’t seen Swanson at my local H.E.B. (the place where Austinites shop) in years. I’ll check just to make sure, but I don’t even think we can get Swanson.
The foil tin is what gives it the crusty top? Interesting, because I cooked this to well-done in the microwave and I remember the crusty top was what I liked about it. The bad thing was that I couldn’t eat very much of it after the microwavation (word?) because all of the stuff on the edges got stuck to the sides (as you mentioned is happening in the picture). From the looks of it, Abi may not have cooked it to the max when she realized the edges were burning, so she missed out on our beloved crusty top. So I guess with the metal tin and oven-cooking, the burnt edgedness would have been prevented and this would have been five-star mac. If only I’d had this mac back then, I would buy it regularly. I only don’t buy it now because I’m only paying for the unburnt half of the meal.
If only, if only…
*Long comment over*
I love the macaroni & cheese pot pie! Why? I have to waych my sodium intake and I love mac&cheese. Problem: I could always get it at Big Y supermarket in Worcester ma, now they have discontinued it!!! Anyone know a store that carries it in the Worcester, Shrewsbury, Northboro, Westboro area in Mass?
Help! Thanks!
When I saw that pic, I wanted to barf. It looks disgusting. I wouldn’t even eat it.
I have been visiting this site a lot lately, so i thought it is a good idea to show my appreciation with a comment.
Thanks,

PS: I am a single dad
I’ve always enjoyed Swanson’s Mac & cheese single dinners. In fact, this is the last microwave dinner I could eat. I have many autoimmune diseases, incl. Ulcerative Colitis which immediately omits any food with onions, or garlic, any kind of beans which I love, no raw fruits or veeggies, incl salads. Pretty slim pickins’ for one who loved to eat.. OK now–the dinners you had tasted like cheese–until a few months ago–when you changed the outer pkg., the receipe was also altered. I’ve written before-I can’t stand milk unless well disguised, which Mac & cheese used to be. Now, it seems you’ve used a lesser milk percentage, added water, or something. THE DINNNERS CURDLE__AND MILK SEPARATES FROM WATERY MESS__YUCKY_POO!!! Need I say more??? I’ll only add that both times, my dog has refused to eat this–got the picture??? She used to love it. I hope you can change it back to something edible. Shirlene
what’s the matter with you complainers? If you don’t like the look of the paper bowl the product comes in simply remove it from the paper bowl into a similar size oven or microwave safe bowl.Is that so hard? Spray the bowl with a little nonstick spray. The clean up is a whiz. We’ve tried other brands and the taste just isn’t as good.
We have one problem,we can’t find enough stores who carry the Mac’n'Cheese and we’ve given up on the other brands..
Do they still make this? I haven’t been able to find it in the local markets recently, but there are people in my home who crave it.
