Birds Eye Spring Vegetables in Citrus Sauce

October 25, 2006 | Reviewer: Guest Reviewers

HeatEatReview.com finally gets into the ‘healthy-foods’ game with Veda’s review of Birds Eye Veggies. Did you know that frozen vegetables are often fresher than the ones found in the refrigerated cases at your store? Yes, it is true.

Birds Eye says: Carrots, asparagus, sugar snap peas and red peppers with zesty cilantro and lime

Veda says: I am so glad that I bought this. As directed, I popped the dish into the microwave, with the film intact and let the veggies steam for a couple minutes. Once I finally peeled the plastic film back (thanks to Ryan for helping me, because it was basically super-glued), I found perfectly cooked veggies. The yummy blend of asparagus, snap peas, peppers and carrots was crisp and juicy, with just the right amount of onion, garlic and zesty cilantro. Not only did it smell and look wonderful, but it tasted even better. Good job, Birds Eye. I’ll be back for more!

I eat this for lunch a lot! And sometimes for a quick dinner, I cook up some whole wheat penne and stir it in.

I think this is the healthiest thing we’ve ever featured. That’s sort of sad.

I buy these and serve them as a quick veggie side at dinner but I never thought about using them for a healthy lunch. I think I’d have to stir in some kind of protein to feel full though. Did you feel full?

MaryAnne, I’m with you on needing protein to stay full. I’d opt for half the container plus a some deli turkey on crusty bread for a filling, healthy lunch. Veda isn’t in the office anymore, so I’m not sure she’ll be able to respond to your question.

I couldn’t stand this. I’m one of those people that is sensitive to whatever chemical in cilantro most people can’t detect, so cilantro tastes something along the lines of toxic soap to me.

I found this at http://www.ihatecilantro.com/blog/, and felt compelled to share it:

Although it does look mighty tasty, I’m with MaryAnne on the need for protein supplementation. 70 measly calories for lunch? I think I might have to accompany that with a large piece of cake to feel sated. Way to go on the veggies though, Veda. I’ll have to look into the other varieties…

Crow, my jaw dropped when you made the cilantro/soap comparison, because for years everyone around me has sung the praises of this heinous herb, while I maintained that it tasted like soap to me. No one understood! THANK YOU!!
