Smart Ones says: A delectable Asian sensation of crisp, colorful vegetables and tender white meat chicken, simmered in a sweet and spicy blend of hoisin and soy sauces.

Jess says: Have you ever ordered Chinese food in a “bad” neighborhood? If you have ever had your white box placed in revolving plastic door in the middle of a bullet-proof window then the answer is yes. If the Chinese restaurant also sells chicken wings, the answer is also yes. There was a lovely little store meeting this description across the street from my high school. At “lunch”, we would hum mission impossible ditties as we bounded across the traffic while the security personnel were looking elsewhere (other high school girls).

This meal tastes just like food from that store (oh the memories that came ajourneying to my mind)! It’s just as overly salty and just as skimpy on the chicken. Does it have that extra essence of mischief and ill-spent youth? Only if you add it. The fact that this meal is reminiscent of my old haunting ground is actually a compliment to the meal. Microwave food succeeds if it resembles real “made hot and stayed hot” food, even if that meal is less than inspiring.

Speaking of inspiring, this meal advertises that it is so good for you that this somehow carries over to your moral fiber. It claims “Tastes so good, you want to be good”. Sure. Why not? I’ll pay it forward, by offering this advice: You should eat this meal, but it’s not of “staple lunch item” quality. Just throw it in for a little “spice of life” and only if its heavily discounted. Oh and I like picked some trash up off the street the other day. The Earth says “Thank you, Smart Ones”.

Across my middle school there was this Chinese food place that sold every item for a buck. The portions were HUGE too, probably enough to feed 3 people for 3 bucks. Looking back, it wasn’t exactly gourmet but it hit the spot for salty and filling goodness.

By the way, this site redesign is threatening to my masculinity. Luckily, I am a big boy and will get over it.

Don’t worry. I plan on migrating to a slightly less pink (though still pinker than the previously unpink site) in the next couple of days. So yeah, you’ll just have to deal with this theme until Nov. 1.

In my neighborhood, this restaurant is called China Town. When we feel silly, George and I sing:

    Won’t you take me to…
    China Town!
    Won’t you take me to…
    China Town!

    To the tune of Funkytown.

Im pretty open to most foodstuffs, however I find this line of frozen dishes to be pretty nasty overall. I find them on sale sometimes for like 3/500 - 1/2 way thru the second one, I am usually going ‘ehhh - nasty’. My personal rule is for a frozen meal is that if it isnt’s four bucks before coupon/sale price then its got to be nasty. Yes, I also respect the concept of a food budget and once live on top ramen and frozen sausage links only for 18 days.

Smart Ones is my favorite frozen meal line. I don’t feel like I’m slowly killing myself with giant amounts of salt, fat, and half my day’s calories. Plus some of them, such as this one, I feel like I could break out for dinner and feel satisfied and happy. Today I tried this one, thanks to the review, and got looks of envy from my co-workers. One even asked where I bought my lunch. It was impressive. Not impressive ones from this line include anything with shrimp or the Southwestern bowl. This moves its way into my top three, closely competing with the Chicken Santa Fe. Yum!
