Vegan Noodles at Trader Joe’s

September 14, 2006 | Reviewer: Abi Jones

Trader Joe's Vegan Pad Thai

Hey Vegans, Vegetarians, and Trader Joe’s aficionados, there’s a new type of noodle lunch out there. East coast TJ’s locations are now carrying Pad Thai, Peanut Satay Noodles, and Kung Pao Noodles under the Trader Joe’s brand.

HeatEatReview.com will give you the scoop on these meals next week, starting with the Peanut Satay Noodles. No, Trader Joe’s didn’t send them to us for free. Instead, we (meaning Abi) dropped six bucks in an effort to satisfy a major case of curiosity.

If any of you West Coast HeatEatReview readers see the product in your stores, please let us know!

I think I’ve seen this in the TJ’s around here (West Coast) before. Are they not normally here?

Well, I wrote about a confirmed East Coast sighting because TJ’s carries different varieties of products on different coasts. This is evident in the utter lack of Trader Joe’s Pesto Tortellini bowls in the DC area. Plus, they distribute different Fearless Flyers based on the geographic location of the stores.

i wanted to send an approving nod for 1. disclosing when you get stuff for free and 2. for bravely purchasing these products with your own hard-earned cash.

even with a disclosure, i’m still kindof on the fence about whether it’s a good idea to write up stuff that people send. (and this is more of a philosophical comment, not specific to you-all. i did, after all, recently write about an item someone sent, which i of course disclosed.)

on the one hand, i applaud the enterprising mktg person who recognizes the nascent potential in our puny food blogs, and realize that a disclosure solves the ethical problem.

but on the other hand, part of my fuzzy concept of what makes a blog good has to do with the random-discovery aspect.

Palm Springs’ Trader Joe’s sells them for $1.99 which is too much for a small serving of oiled noodles sprinkled with peanut dust and a little red pepper.
The texture was rubbery and it actually made me gag several times, when the noodles I’d thought I’d chewed didn’t separate into bites after all, and went down as perforated long rubbery strings. Such yuck!! They tasted of sweet peanuts, reminiscent of beer nuts, with a little heat added, not bad, since I like beer nuts, but certainly not more than a one star flavor.
They do beat the heck out of Top Raven or Cup o’ Crud for lunch, but for 99 cents I could have had a bean and rice burrito that actually contains fiber and protein instead of sugary white floury noodle glop.
Would I recommend them or get them again? Never!!

Being a regular at Trader Joe’s I also recongnized the package. ( I always went for the odon noodles next to it…by the way the spring onion one is hella good.)
When my daughter came home from school this summer she brought back the Pad Thai package. I don’t know what she did to it because the little girl just does NOT cook, it was excellent. (she say’s LOVE lol)
So much like the our favorite Thai Rest. in the Bay Area. I did miss the crunch texture of larger peanunts. She said she always added xx carrots and cabbage. For a $1.99 she must of lived on the stuff.
I’m adding it to my Trader Joe’s list.

One other comment: Do you ever go grocery shopping buy a few items and at check stand realized you hardly bought anything good and spent about $50 bucks.
My experience at TJ I usually purchaae 3 different types of greens for salad including spinach (try herb baby springs), sprouts, carrots, pea pods, the frozen garlic and pesto squares, frozen green beans, feta, hummes dip, favorite water crackers, those long wrapped cucumbers, olive oil, frozen grilled chicken strips, 2 or 3 bottles of Arizona green tea, sourdough bread or petas, this granolla ceral for 2.99 (unreal) and spend approximately $25 dollars.
    I LOVE TRADER JOE.

Our SoCal TJ’s has had the vegan noodles for a while - I just tried the Pad Thai and thought it was great - I added some leftover grilled shrimp, some cilantro and a squeeze of fresh lime. Really good for 2 minutes in the microwave - I ate the whole thing before I realized it was 2 servings. I’m stuffed but this is a nice side dish or main dish with tofu or something for vegan friends.

TJ’s noodle cart noodles are actually pretty good for what’s on the market. i eat a lot of instant noodles because i like them. i have only tried the pad thai ones but i thought the noodle box was a great bargain and really tastey. there are competing brands of noodle bowls out there that have pad thai but they aren’t as BIG nor as GOOD.. and they cost as much as 2.99. generally with noodle bowls i add stuff to them for nutrition (or pack it with me for lunch). for the pad thai, i recommend some chopped peanuts, bean sprouts, lime, and fried tofu. at minimum just add the lime and peanuts! thanks for your reviews, i really enjoyed reading the blogs on your website!

Okay, I have to say that these are the WORST packaged foods I have ever had the displeasure of eating at Trader Joe’s…. and mind you, I’m a huge fan of Trader Joe’s!.

    1) The sauces didn’t even remotely resemble Pad Thai or Satay sauces in taste or consistency.

    2) Despite the garnish pictured (carrot, greens), the sauce was as bland and unvegetable’d as chef-boy-r-dee.

    3) No decent texture at all. Slimey noodles, pureed sauce. No crunch… and no discernible veggies, tofu, anything.

I would have somewhat-grudgingly paid 99 cents for this in college. But after eating some really delicious and affordable dishes from TJ’s, I’m annoyed I bought two of this crap.
