Healthy Choice says: We spread a slice of crusty French bread with rich and tasty tomato sauce then top it generously with mozzarella cheese. The result is a great
tasting meal that is also low fat.

Abi says: I got home late from class (10:45pm) last night and really needed something to eat. Unfortunately, George had consumed all of the leftover pizza from the weekend. I would have liked some craved pizza.

After standing before the open freezer for a few minutes (something I would not have been allowed to do as a kid but am now free to do because I pay my own bills) I realized that the best looking pizza in our freezer was also enormous. It was a huge, brick oven something or other. It looked marvelous, but all I wanted was a slice. So, I looked through my freezer for other pizza options. I had a DiGiorno rising crust microwavable pepperoni pizza. I had a Smart Ones microwavable cheese pizza. I had a Healthy Choice French Bread Pizza. No Red Baron. Sigh.

Healthy Choice Cheese French Bread Pizza

Ok, I’m not sure why I even had to explain my pizza choices there. You already know what kind of pizza I ate, the picture is right there: I’ve got a title up and everything. How was the Healthy Choice French Bread pizza? Bleh.

Yes, it was ‘bleh’.

The crust didn’t get crispy, just hard, and the cheese was an insult to the good name of mozzarellas everywhere. The sauce slammed my tastebuds with loads of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Seriously, I’m not one to knock the wonders of corn, but this was too much of a good thing. Or, depending on your viewpoint, too much of a bad thing.

I’d really like to say that I enjoyed this, as it goes on sale quite often. But I cannot in good conscience recommend that you buy this product.

My goodness, I can’t believe people eat this rubbish in the States, I thought ready meals was a trend that only us Brits inflicted on ourselves since we don’t know how to cook!

While this pizza was not very good, the United States does have some rather impressive frozen pizzas. In fact, our frozen pizzas are better than 90% of the pizza in the UK. We make really, really good pizza here in America. Things we are not as good at: soccer, winning war in Iraq, making funny tv shows that aren’t just ripoffs of better shows from Britain.

Maybe there’s a reason it goes on sale so often. Thanks for saving us all from the same fate.

I’ve never had a French Bread pizza come out good in the microwave. I’ve never had any pizza come out good in the microwave, actually. That’s why I love my toaster oven.

I imagine it’d be pretty easy to just buy french bread, pizza sauce, and mozzarella cheese and make a damn good version in a snap.

Maybe some meat might’ve made it more mouthwatering.

    I like alliteration.

Also, I would’ve gone for the DiGiorno rising crust microwavable pepperoni pizza. I think it’s the best microwavable pizza EVER.

@Heather - Have you tried any of the Linda McCartney frozen pizzas? They were on sale, but the only one available was mushroom. Ew.

@Ace - This Healthy Choice pizza isn’t nearly as good as a toaster-baked english muffin with pesto and havarti or marinara and mozzarella. The only problem with those two items is that I live in one of the most humid places in the U.S. I swear, bread molds within 24 hours.

@Marvo - I have a DiGiorno pepperoni pizza in my freezer. After this experience: http://heateatreview.com/2006/05/03/digiorno-microwave-rising-crust-supreme-pizza/ I’m not sure when I’ll get out that other pizza.

Have you tried freezing your bread? I too had the mold problem, until I started the freezination. Damn humidity.

I keep my bread in the fridge, it lasts a month.

Abi, I LOVE the Linda McCartney pizzas. And it just so happens that the mushroom one is my very favorite. We need to break you of this mushroom aversion once and for all. Fungus is our friend, Abi, our friend.

I put the bread in the fridge and then I forget that it exists. In college I did the whole ‘freeze your bread’ thing and it only worked if I planned on making grilled cheese. Plain old sandwiches and defrosted bread aren’t that good.

For 5 grams of fat, I don’t care if it tasted like cardboard, I’d eat it! :)
