Safeway says: Peppered to Perfection! Spicy chicken breast strips served with rice, water chestnuts, onions, celery, yellow carrots, and mushrooms.

Carolyn says: This was the most disappointing frozen meal I have had in a long, long time. The large size of the portion had me excited for a big, hearty lunch. The box clearly said “TWO SERVINGS”, but if it was good I knew I could finish the meal. As soon as I took the tray out of the microwave I realized this meal was not going to be as the picture suggested. The vegetables were soggy and brown. I’m not sure why they decided that bean sprouts were appropriate for a frozen meal, but it was a very bad decision. The onions were brown and soggy clumps, the celery was slimy, and the only thing that displayed any crispness were the water chestnuts. The peppered sauce coagulated while heating, and despite my stirring, there were areas of caked teriyaki sauce along the sides of the container and in two corners. The chicken was the only decent part of the meal, so once I finished the pieces of chicken, I threw the rest away.

Pictures are worth a thousand words and Carolyn’s Safeway Eating Right Black Peppered Chicken looks like a pile o’ crap.

Maybe safeway has a new EatingRight brand because the meals I have got lately, they are in a white box with a green label and they do not say safeway. Anyway, I think they are really good, even better than lean cuisine and it is cheaper. I think they are better because the meals are simple. Like Roasted turkey and cornbread stuffing with chopped carrots, I just had that today. Other ones are like roasted beefe and string beans with wild rice. Anyhoo, I really like them, but they are in a different package than the one featured above.

I like them too! I just had the Pineapple chicken with black beans and rice and it was SO good… There are a few that I wasn’t too impressed with…. but overall, really tasty… and they use REAL CHICKEN instead of the processed pressed “chicken” they put in the Healthy Choice meals.

I left this comment somewhere else, too, but it really sums up my experiences with the brand:

I eat a frozen Eating Right meal for lunch virtually every work-day and with only rare exception, I find they are delicious and fit well with my doctor advised diet. The sodium tends to run a bit high, but compare the quality (taste) of food, variety of choices and portion size to, say, Lean Cuisine, and you will invariably get more and better tasting food with much better over-all nutrition. Granted, this ‘extra’ amount of food may be more rice or veggies, but I -welcome- that, and have never felt stinted in the amount of meat or fish included.

Because of the great success I’ve enjoyed with the frozen lunches, I have recently expanded my pantry to include more Eating Right products. So far, the cereal bars, rice, oatmeal and frozen waffles all taste great and are not out of line for nutrition for for those items. Again, perhaps a little more sodium, here and there, than I’d prefer, but not ‘diet-busting’.

I applaud the move in to other foods because it helps ensure that the ingredients and portions listed are comparable and fairly static, and so far, quality seems to be fairly universal; if one product tastes good, the others probably do too. The Eating Right meals also tend to run a bit less expensive than non-sale prices for “brand name” foods like Lean Cuisine.

I actually stopped eating frozen healthy meals for awhile because all the ones I got just tasted aweful. But I just saw the Eating Right meals at Safeway and tried a couple they have both been very tastey. I will be buying these from now on! The Chicken in peanut sauce was very yummy and only 6pts. on my weight watchers. Thanks Safeway. :^)

Look at the ingredients of the Eating Right products like the frozen meals, the cereals, the canned fruit and you will see High Fructose Corn Syrup and hydrogenated oils. These are not eating right ingredients, they are poison. Theses products are also loaded with preservatives and things like fake sugar (Splenda). They advertise “no sugar added” but then put Splenda in it. Please do not be fooled by slick packaging.

I am not a big fan of frozen meals but the Eating Right - Roasted turkey with cornbread stuffing with chopped carrots was surprising good and filling.

I just discovered these and am totally digging them. I have no delusions that they are SUPER healthy or organic, but in comparison to other frozen lunch items, they are better. I’m always surprised by the color and quantity of veggies in the box - they’re so bright! I’ve had the lemonegrass chickena nd the butternut ravioli and enjoyed both very much.
