Healthy Choice says: White meat chicken with fiesta sauce, rice, vegetables and caramel apple dessert

Abi says: After wrestling with the film cover on the dessert, my hands were redolent with the scent of caramel. I love caramel. I also love to try things that are vaguely hispanic, like me. I know it isn’t a good sign that I’m more willing to write about having caramel hands than eat this meal, but look at those pictures. You and I both know that this isn’t going to be delicious. At this point, I’m not even looking for delicious, I’m looking for something that will keep me from ordering pizza.

The meal comes in four sections and I will describe these individually for the eater’s benefit:

Chicken Breast and Fiesta Sauce: Remember when your family was barbecuing some chicken and your uncle Roger started telling funny jokes from the construction site and you completely forgot about the chicken until Aunt Lulu started yelling ‘Hey! Is somebody going to take care of that chicken?’. That’s how dry this chicken is, but without the delicious charred effect a barbecue imparts. Also, “Fiesta Sauce” = watery ketchup with spices and lime juice. While tomato, spices, lime juice can improve many items (see bloody mary), this combo in the form of ‘Fiesta Sauce’ does nothing for the chicken. It is the psuedo-Mexican version of sweet and sour sauce.

Fiesta Rice Blend: While the image shows individual grains of rice lovingly studded with black beans, reality is much closer to a bland rice mash colored with turmeric. I like turmeric. I used it to make some samosas this weekend. Color doesn’t equal flavor.

Corn, Red Peppers, and Scallions: The vegetables are sitting in so much water that one wonders if Healthy Choice forgot to drain the water from the can of mixed vegetables.

Caramel Apple Dessert: Nicole glanced over my meal and said ‘At least you get a yummy dessert.’ But she was wrong. The picture on the box shows chunks of apple lightly sprinkled with granola. Reality gives you a sea of vaguely caramelly apple syrup with a few stray nibs of apple.
